What Is an Immigration Hold?
An immigration hold, or detainers, are devices used by DHS or ICE officials when they believe a person who may be deportable has been arrested by a state or local law enforcement agency. The detainer instructs the local authorities to hold the arrested person for up to 48 hours beyond the time when he or she would be released.
